With Garonga’s experienced guides and trackers, a safari becomes about far more than simply ticking animals off a list. It’s an opportunity to understand the intricate relationships between wildlife, birds, plants and the landscape itself, discovering the rich diversity that makes this remarkable wilderness so special.
Welcome to the Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve
Situated between Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa and Tzaneen, the Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve is one of South Africa’s outstanding conservation success stories.
Today, the reserve spans 27,000 hectares through a joint partnership between the Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve and the neighbouring Pidwa Nature Reserve. Together, these protected wilderness areas create one continuous landscape where wildlife can roam freely across unfenced terrain.
Flowing through the reserve are the Makhutsi and Selati Rivers, two lifelines that support an incredible diversity of wildlife throughout the year. These river systems provide vital water sources for animals while creating varied habitats that attract everything from elephants and hippos to kingfishers, fish eagles and countless other species.
Since the reserve was established in the mid-1990s, carefully managed reintroduction programmes have restored many species that had disappeared from the area, including elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and hippo. These conservation efforts have transformed Makalali into one of South Africa’s premier Big Five safari destinations while maintaining a relatively low vehicle density, allowing for intimate wildlife encounters.
The Famous Big Five
For many first-time safari guests, spotting the Big Five is high on the wish list.
This iconic list includes:

Lion
Nothing compares to seeing wild lions in the bush. Whether relaxing beneath the shade of a tree or becoming active after dusk, lions remain one of Makalali’s most sought-after sightings.
Leopard
Often considered the most elusive of the Big Five, leopards reward patient observers. Their remarkable camouflage and solitary nature make every encounter feel truly special.
Elephant
Makalali’s elephant herds are among the reserve’s most memorable residents. Watching these intelligent giants interact, communicate and care for their young offers an unforgettable glimpse into their complex social lives.
Rhino
Both black and white rhino can be found at Makalali. Seeing these endangered animals in their natural habitat highlights the importance of ongoing conservation efforts across protected areas like Makalali.

Buffalo
Disease-free buffalo were successfully reintroduced after being absent from the area for decades. Today, large herds move through the reserve, often accompanied by oxpeckers and other birdlife.
Beyond the Big Five
While the Big Five may steal the headlines, many guests discover that the smaller or lesser-known species become some of their favourites.
Other species also present within Makalali:
- Cheetah
- African wild dogs (among Africa’s most endangered carnivores)
- Spotted and brown hyenas
- Hippos and crocodiles
- Towering giraffes
- Zebra, wildebeest, kudu, impala, nyala and waterbuck
- Warthogs with tails held high
Each species plays an important role in the reserve’s delicate ecosystem, creating the intricate balance that makes every safari so rewarding.

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
The Greater Makalali is also home to an impressive variety of birdlife, making it an excellent destination for both experienced birders and casual enthusiasts.
One of the reserve’s greatest conservation successes is the presence of the endangered Southern Ground Hornbill, while vultures, martial eagles, fish eagles, kingfishers, rollers, bee-eaters and countless other species can often be spotted throughout the year.
Between larger wildlife sightings, the birdlife provides endless opportunities for photography and discovery.
Don’t Forget the Little Five
While many guests arrive hoping to spot the Big Five, Garonga’s experienced guides are just as passionate about introducing visitors to the Little Five – fascinating creatures whose names echo Africa’s most famous animals.
The Elephant Shrew, Leopard Tortoise, Buffalo Weaver, Ant Lion and Rhino Beetle may be small, but they each play an important role in the bushveld ecosystem.
Along the way, your guide will also reveal the stories hidden within the landscape itself. From medicinal plants and towering trees to shrubs traditionally used for food, tools and medicine, every game drive becomes an opportunity to discover the remarkable relationships between the fauna, flora and people who have lived alongside them for generations.
Every game drive offers something different. One outing may reveal lions, leopards or elephants, while the next focuses on birdlife, antelope or the smaller species that are just as fascinating.
With experienced guides and trackers leading the way, you’ll gain insight into animal behaviour, tracks, birds, plants and the intricate connections that make the Greater Makalali ecosystem so remarkable. It’s this deeper understanding of the bush that makes every safari both memorable and meaningful, rather than chasing a checklist.
Garonga has three newly converted Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster safari vehicles – becoming the first lodge to offer game drives in these specially adapted vehicles. With a maximum of six guests per vehicle, every drive remains intimate, ensuring excellent visibility and unhurried moments in the wild.
